I don't remember how I heard about this local celebration, but I instantly new I wanted to be involved. In the early 1980s I accepted the role of "sustainer of infant life" by choosing to breast feed. This obvious choice made me feel like I was breaking new ground, like choosing to start a 2000 mile walk or a trip to the moon; it had been done before, but not by anyone I'd known. Not one of my close relatives had attempted this in the preceding 30 years. Turns out I needed lots of support, I'm grateful for the local La Leche League for helping me during those days.
When I contacted Jesse Albatrosov at www.lactationsource.com, she not only booked me to photograph the event, but confirmed that Lactation Source is the support network and referral service for families in Volusia County.
Saturday, August 2, 2014, I spent the morning at the World Breastfeeding Week and Latch On in Daytona Beach. As I captured images of families; parents, siblings, and grandparents all celebrating the beautiful sweetness of this completely natural act of love. I enjoyed capturing mother and child as depicted in art throughout the ages and can only hope that I did justice to these endearing moments; people gathering to support a common goal, feeding our infants and toddlers in the way our bodies were designed to nourish them.
In a time when Olivia Wilde makes the national news in the US for breastfeeding her own infant during a photo shoot, I realize how important it is to support mothers who simply choose to nourish their children naturally. I hope you are as moved by the photos as I was by capturing them.
